Ageing

Please watch the video before class and make a short presentation about it for class. Then think of ten questions to ask me about the video.

  Ageing

It is eighteen years since I came to Japan. I was thirty-six years old and believed that I was at my mental and physical peak, but I thought the same when I was twenty. Now that I am fifty-five years old, how have I aged mentally and physically? I feel that I am as sharp minded as I was when I was twenty, but I know it is because I use my brain.  Every day I practice Japanese, play chess and try to learn something new. There is an English saying "use it or lose it"; I use my brain so it stays sharp.
But physically I am not as fit as I was eighteen years ago, but that is more to do with lifestyle than ageing.  I could never be as fit as I was at twenty, but if I ate less, drank less and exercised more, I would be much healthier.
I think there is one wonderful aspect to ageing, the thirty-six-year-old me, was much more mature, experienced and confident than the twenty-year-old. But the present me is the most mature, experienced and confident me, so far.

When do I use this expression?
In what situation do I use this expression?

Mixed Feelings

In this weeks class, there is no video.

I am writing this on Saturday the 12th of May. It is the day of the British Royal Wedding. I have mixed feelings about this wedding. The meaning of "mixed feelings" is partly I agree and partly I disagree.

I like Harry as a person, he has done and is doing many good things for his country. He is a better person for the UK than most of the so-called British politicians. I hope he has a long and happy married life. I cannot say anything about his bride, because I do not know anything about her.
You may have noticed that I did not write Prince Harry, this is because I do not accept anyone as a prince, princess, king or queen. The UK is a monarchy, I would prefer it to be a republic. The people are more important than the Royal Family, in my opinion.
The Royal Family are paying for the wedding, but the security is paid for by British taxes. The cost is millions of pounds. A lot of British people are happy to pay for the security, but many others are very angry about it.
The wedding is taking place in Windsor, Elizabeth owns the castle there. The royal family sometimes live there, but they have other castles and palaces too. Many people live in Windsor: in their own houses; rented houses; private flats and rental flats. But there are homeless too! Many living on the streets. So that Windsor looks pretty for the wedding, the police have forced those homeless people out of Windsor
I like Harry and I wish him well, but I think the money being used to protect the rich and famous going to his wedding, was being spent on helping the homeless.

Please think of some questions to ask me and prepare a talk about something you have mixed feelings about.

Lesson Two: Film Making for Change

Before watching the video, think about these questions:

  1. What do you expect this video to be about?
  2. Depending on the person that you are talking to, do you have a different personality?
Now watch the video, answer the questions and think of some questions to ask me.
  1. Should children be politically active?
  2. How did you feel about Zackary's first film?
  3. How important is publicity for political change?
  4. Should children be taught to speak publically about their idea's?
Some chunks from the talk, that we will talk about and use in class.
  • Let me explain by...
  • Something that was bothering me was...
  • Over the next six months...
  •  They all thought I was...
  • Believe it or not...
